SysteMatter was started by Sander Gielen to share ideas and methods in the field of system engineering, materials technology, and multi-scale approaches.
“I always wondered how the world works and how we can improve it. As a little kid I played a lot with Lego and build all kind of things to understand how it worked: all kind of cars, gear boxes. That’s why I studied mechanical engineering in the field of biomechanics. I got intrigued also how the invisible world is connected to the visible world. Processes at the molecular level and smaller, determine how the visible world behaves. I continued my studies with a PhD. I modelled how proteins and chemicals generate forces in your muscles and how these come together at the macro scale. This has become the main tread in my carreer. Using these multiscale technologies I worked in the domains of crash safety, multi-physics design, naval ships, micro- and nano-electronics and photonics, quantum devices, 3D printing, organ-on-chip devices, semiconductor equipment.
I will share my curiousity in these technologies and hope to inspire others to pursue a carreer in this field as well.
